Thomas Schindl was born in Gmünd/Austria in 1980 and studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna under Kurt Prihoda and Horst Berger, as well as at the Bruckner Conservatory in Linz (today the Anton Bruckner Private University) under Leonhard Schmidinger and Bogdan Bacanu. From 2002 to 2007 he was principal timpanist for the Göttingen Symphony Orchestra (Germany). In 2005 he founded the GermanAustrian chamber music ensemble “Blue Chamber Quartet”. During his time in Göttingen, guest engagements have brought him to the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, the NDR Symphony Orchestra Hamburg, the NDR Radiophilharmonie Hanover, the Stuttgart Philharmonic, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, the Frankfurt Opera, the State Theater Hanover and the State Theater Kassel, among others. Since 2007 Thomas Schindl has been the 1. Percussionist and Assistant Timpanist at the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. He has also been playing in the ensemble “SymphonikerBlås” since 2009 and in the ensemble “piano meets percussion” since 2012.

Further guest engagements have brought him to the Vienna Philharmonic, the Vienna State Opera, the RSO Vienna, the Bruckner Orchestra Linz and the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, among others. In addition to his duties with the Vienna Symphony and his chamber music projects, he works as a lecturer at national and international academies and master courses - For example at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, the IBC Bregenz, the Orchestra Academy Toblach and at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz. Thomas Schindl was heard as a soloist in the Brahmssaal of the Wiener Musikverein with the Wiener Concertverein and Christos Hatzis' "Pyrrichean Dances" and he will premiere the marimba concert "The Four Temperaments" by Wolfram Wagner in Bregenz in 2024.
